It's officially training season. The first nipple chaffing event of the year has struck and it was a bloody affair. Gross, I know, but necessary. I took off my OU sweatshirt and my white dri fit undershirt had two nice bloody spots. Awesome. It'll be painful for a couple days but it'll eventually toughen up for the cold and wind. Tonight was definitely the coldest run of the year. The wind was nasty. Still no falls (much to Chelle's disappointment). I kind of wish I had more trashy neighbors that left their Christmas lights up all winter. It looks stupid but it makes running at night easier. Just under 8 miles tonight. 7.92 miles to be exact. 36.03 overall with 1,974.97 left. Yeah I wish I would have gone that extra .08 miles but I didn't know that's all I had to reach 8 miles. I love my Nike+ watch but the one HUGE downfall is that it doesn't light up in the dark so I have no idea of what distance I'm at while running. Normally not a big deal but on a night like tonight it's frustrating. Regardless, it was a good run. With the white death coming tomorrow I'm not sure what kind of run I'll be able to get in if any.
Time for the National Championship game. Given my unhealthy infatuation with Steve Prefontaine it's pretty obvious which team I'll be rooting for tonight. Go Ducks! Quack! Quack!
P.S. Whenever I get done with a run Wrigley likes to lick off all the sweat off my face. Is this normal among dogs or is Wrigley "special"?

Colder Than A Pimp's Heart!
I told you colder weather was on its way. I wasn't lying. I'm a man of the cloth! Checking my weather alert on my tool bar says it's 18 degrees. I definitely felt it when I first went out but as usual after I got into the run you kind of forget about the temperature. 6.22 miles tonight. Up to 28.11. I find it hard to keep my mileage down but I'm feeling really good so I think I'm doing something right :) I had the numbness issue with my left foot tonight. Does anyone else have this issue? Usually after about 3 miles one of my feet will go numb. It eventually goes away but it always bothers me. It happens to both feet, never at the same time though....I suspect that wouldn't go well. Open to suggestions.
Didn't quite get the mileage I wanted to this weekend but as Frank Turner would say "Any time I get some time I end up drunk or sleeping in." A special congratulations to Mr. JB Hill for a PR in weekly mileage and long run. The man is a natural. Enjoy it now because I suspect when the little person comes along your running days might be severely hampered :)

T.O. and his tights ain't got shit on the Rev.
So I finally busted out my tights. I'm behind on laundry and I figured it was cold enough to rock the tights. It takes a certain amount of arrogance errrr confidence to sport tights with no shame. Fortunately for me I have just enough of both! :) With TO likely leaving the Bengals there's an obvious void on the team for an amazing athlete that thinks greatly more of themselves than they're actually worth. Might I nominate myself? I'm just as full of myself but am a much less expensive option! It's really a perfect fit. Hey, I was pretty effing sweet at football when we used to play at Juliff's. I'm assuming the NFL wouldn't be that much different.
Anyways back to the running biz. Rocked 6.74 miles. Another good feeling run. That puts me at 21.99 miles for the year and 1989.01 remaining for the year. I'd like to extend a thank you to Schultzie for helping me decide which Road ID to go with. I previously had the FIXX ID but it's no longer in my possession. This time I'm going with the Wrist ID Elite. I do a lot of night time running and do most of my races alone so in case something happens to me while running this has some of my emergency information (ie this person is awesome, don't let him die).

How ya gonna act like my neck don't bling?!
What's the most important accessory in running? Is it the shoes? This seems like a plausible answer. I do like shoes and I must admit that I look pretty sick in my Brooks Adrenaline's but sadly no shoes are NOT the most important accessory in running. Could it be my collection of sweet head and wrist bands? Wow. It's hard for me to argue against this because it's from these items where I draw all my Viking Power, Viking Magic (for Bobsnin & Bitties). This, however, goes more to my vainess and is not entirely mandatory for running. Nay! The single more important accessory in running is the iPod! One simply cannot run without music....well I suppose it's possible but who really wants to run if you can't listen to Right Said Fred and do a little run strut? Not this guy! I'm very particular about my music when I run. I have a designated running iPod. Baron, I know this isn't surprising given my "fleet" of iPods but it is what it is right? Regardless, I thought I'd let you have a little peek into what goes through my head as I run. My favorite running songs are as follows:
1. Hells Bells/Thunderstruck - ACDC
2. State of Love & Trust/Got Some - Pearl Jam
3. Intergalactic - Beastie Boys
4. I Was Wrong/Prison Bound - Social Distortion
5. Gimme Shelter/Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones
6. Rocketman - Elton John (It's a Prefontaine thing, lay off me pal)
7. Most 90's early 2000's rap (Ludacris, DMX, Snoop, Dre, 2Pac, Eminem, etc)
Obviously this is just a small sample of songs but these are the most notable ones I can remember giving me a big adrenaline boost in different races in the past. It's an amazing feeling really. You're tired, you hurt, and then you hear "that" song and you start getting jazzed up and it feels like a shower of awesome and you just dig deep and blast out of your funk. Maybe I'm unique in this but I really don't think I could do the running I do without music. From the adrenaline it can provide to just allowing me to zone out for miles at a time it's, for me, the most important aspect of any run!
Speaking of running. I put down 6.02 miles last night. I felt good. Really good actually. It was a little colder but that was mostly because there was a cutting wind. So my total is now 15.25 for the year. 1,995.75 to go. Hey look at that! A milestone. Under 2,000! :)

Nachos + Running = Bad Idea
I met someone for dinner last night at Friday's and I just can't pass up their Tostado Nachos. They're simply the greatest nachos ever. Going into it I knew it was a bad idea having them and then going running later but alas I was powerless to say no.
In all honesty the run didn't go that poorly. The nachos didn't hit me until after the run when I was trying to go to bed and had some nasusea issues. I'm all good now! My hamstring tightened up a little bit as did my back but I think some of that had to do with wearing more clothes than usual. I really hate wearing much when I run. I prefer a dri fit t-shirt and a pair of shorts. I'd go with nothing but compression shorts if I could but I suspect that would bring unwanted attention from the authorities. Jerks. I thought it was going to be colder than it actually was so I had a hoodie and sweatpants on. Not needed. I was never cold and was sweating more than I usually do. For the third of January it was surprisingly mild. I ended up running about 5.1 miles. I know the total is a little lower than I what I could/should be doing but I want to start slow. Really build up my core strength and have a solid base as a foundation to my later runs. I've always just forced myself to do long runs right away and while it got me ready for a marathon it was hell on my body. Regardless, that is 9.23 miles this year. Only 2,001.77 to go!
On a final note I decided that my opening song to my next marathon will be Kick Out the Jams by Pearl Jam. These things are important. I need to post my theme song for the year soon. It's amazing! :)

2011 in 2011
The idea is simple. 2,011 miles in 2011. I've never sniffed this kind of mileage. My previous high was around 1,500 miles. Last year I did 4 marathons which was pretty good. I was hoping for 6 but travel, injuries, and a lack of discipline prevented this from occuring. There's nothing special about the 2,011 other than I want to push myself harder than I have before and refocus my efforts and dediciation on running. I don't have a set number of marathons I'd like to complete this year. 6 sounds like a reasonable number again. I haven't officially stated that this is the year but if I'm successful in my quest for 2,011 miles then it's not unreasonable to think that this could be the year I finally complete an ultramarathon of 50K or dare I dream of 50 miles? We'll see! I'm already signed up for the Flying Pig and once the Trail Marathon in Wyoming opens up I'll register for that.
Last night I did roughly 4.2 miles. Felt pretty good. No back or groin issues. While I'm not in the best shape I've ever been for running I'm probably healthier than I've been in a long time. My stress fractures seem to be back to good. It was cold but not freezing. Rougher weather is certainly on its way.
